Why is discipleship such a big deal to us at St. John’s? Because “being the church” means much more than “coming to church,” and “being a Christian” goes far beyond “coming to Christ.”
When Jesus chose his 12 disciples, he called them to drop everything and come follow him. In the same way, Jesus calls us to let go of our self-interest and to follow him with an all-consuming devotion.
As the disciples followed Jesus through the three years of his ministry, they sat at his feet and listened to his teachings, they ate with him, they healed the sick and cast out demons with him and in his name, they watched him serve and they were served by him. They traveled with him, hungered and feasted with him, suffered and rejoiced with him. Their whole lives were centered around Jesus.
So how do we, the Church, follow Jesus as his disciples? We don’t have the opportunity to physically follow Jesus around the dusty roads of the ancient Middle East, but at St. John’s we seek to follow Christ through the same kinds of experiences as his first disciples.
The primary goal of the Discipleship program at St. John’s is to bring about faith formation and spiritual development in all our members and regular visitors, from children to adults. We want to offer special opportunities for people of all age groups to grow and develop as disciples, but ultimately we want to draw all these groups together as one united family. We want this family to worship together, to learn together, to fellowship together, to serve together, and to serve one another.
Together we are learning what it means to be disciples of Jesus Christ. We don’t always get it right (thank the Lord for grace!), but we are on a journey together. We invite you to join us.
If you have questions regarding any of the Discipleship programming at St. John’s, please contact the Discipleship Coordinator at discipleship@makedisciples.com or 262-786-6887 ext. 14.
We look forward to growing as Disciples of Christ together with you!
