The Biblical Accounts of Christmas

Christmas Scripture Quiz -- See how well you can separate our traditions of Christmas from what is contained in the actual Biblical passages about the Nativity.

Luke -- The Annunciation -- In the first chapter of Luke's Gospel we have the account of the Angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she would be the mother of the Messiah and Mary's trip to see her cousin Elizabeth.

Luke -- The Nativity -- In the second chapter of Luke's Gospel we are presented with the central Christmas story. Jesus is born in a stable while shepherds watch their flocks at night. (Another version)

Matthew-- In Matthew's Gospel we are presented with the stories of Jesus' birth and of the Magi -- wisemen from the East who come to worship the new born king with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

John -- The opening verses of John's Gospel deal not with the birth of Christ, but instead remind Christians that "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God."

Isaiah's Emmanuel Prophecy -- Centuries before the birth of Christ, Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would give birth and that she would name her child "Emmanuel."

Galatians 4:4-6 -- The only other direct reference in the New Testament to the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Infancy Narratives -- A scholarly review of the Biblical tests concerning the birth of Christ by Donald J. Goergen, O.P.
